The last impression is as important as the first one. So, don’t miss your chance to ask closing questions at the end of the interview. If you ask me why it is important, please check these reasons that personally motivate me to ask questions when I am interviewed:
- An interview isn’t only about the employer and how well you meet the requirements of the job; it is also a place for you to learn more about the potential employer and the role. I understand that you can read the job posting or check the website, but learning more about the position from the insiders such as your future manager or a colleague is super important.
- You can’t go wrong by showing interest in what other people may share about the role or company. Usually, people enjoy sharing information that they are familiar with or have extensive experience with. This is a nice way to show a genuine interest in people and the organization.
- It is also a great opportunity to learn more about things that are important for you to be successful in your next job. It can be the organization’s work culture, projects, professional development, aspirations, etc.
- In addition, the depth of your questions shows how well you are prepared for this interview.
Tip: It is preferred to ask 2–3 closing questions at the end of an interview.
Here are some examples of good closing questions that I found during my own research when I was looking for a job :
- “What are the organization’s biggest challenges?”
- “How would the person doing this job be involved in meeting these challenges?”
- “How does the organization support professional development?”
- “How is success measured in this company?” OR “What have past employees done to succeed in this position?”
- “How would you describe the culture of this organization?” OR “What makes people stay at this company?” OR “What do you like most about working for this company?”
- “Is there anything we haven’t covered that you think is important to know about working here?”
- “What’s your timeline for making a decision, and when can I expect to hear back from you?”
